Job Description
Duties and responsibilities:
• Animal care and monitoring.
• Managing the breeding of mice and rats.
• Perform vaccination, deworming and parasite control of animals.
• Administration of substances, which include subcutaneous, intravenous, intramuscular, ocular and oral.
• Blood collection.
• Perform euthanasia of animals as required.
• Organ collection from carcasses.
• Receiving and quarantine of animals.
• Perform activities associated with managing research studies.
• Provide necessary guidance regarding project planning including ethics applications.
• Provide training on procedures to students, staff and researchers.
• Collection and transportation of animals.
• Procurement of animal feed supplies and equipment.
• Compiling and reviewing of documents, standard operating procedures and protocols.
• Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
• Maintenance and operation of equipment.
• Cleaning and preparation of equipment and animal cages.
• Work on weekends and public holidays. Note: Animals refer to laboratory and farm animals
Inherent Job Requirements:
Officer:
• Must be a qualified Laboratory Animal Technologist or Veterinary Nurse.
• Registered with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinary Nurse or Laboratory Animal Technologist with evidence of competencies of the following in rodents: oral gavage; subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, intracardiac and intravenous injections; blood collection from the vein or heart; cervical dislocation in mice; euthanasia of rodents.
• A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in an animal research environment, performing procedures on animals, or other relevant clinical environment registered with the SAVC.
• A valid driver’s licence (attach a copy).
• Proof of attendance of an animal ethics course or seminar (attach copy of certificate of attendance).
Senior Officer:
• Must be a qualified Laboratory Animal Technologist or Veterinary Nurse.
• Registered with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a Veterinary Nurse or Laboratory Animal Technologist with evidence of competencies of the following in rodents: oral gavage; subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, intracardiac and intravenous injections; blood collection from the vein or heart; cervical dislocation in mice; euthanasia of rodents.
• A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in an animal research environment, performing procedures on animals, or other relevant clinical environment registered with the SAVC
• Experience related to participation in facility management.
• A valid driver’s licence (attach a copy).
• Proof of attendance of an animal ethics course or seminar (attach copy of certificate of attendance).
