Job Description

The Department of Chemical Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of Cape
Town has an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research and invites applications from suitably qualified persons
for these posts commencing 1 January 2022. The Department is actively committed to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate
levels and research. The undergraduate degree programme is ECSA accredited. Research is carried out in the areas of bioprocess
engineering, catalysis and catalytic processing, engineering education, environmental and process systems engineering,
hydrometallurgy, minerals processing, precipitation and crystallisation, and reaction engineering. Furthermore, the department
houses strong inter-disciplinary research institutes and themes, such as the Future Water Institute and the Minerals-to-Metals
Initiative. The Department enjoys strong, global support for its teaching and research programmes, and maintains close links with
the South African chemical, petrochemical, biotechnological and minerals industries.
Requirements for Appointment at Senior Lecturer Level (2 Posts)
• BSc (Eng) in Chemical Engineering, or a closely allied engineering discipline, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering or a
closely allied scientific discipline;
• Teaching experience and the ability to teach in the BSc (Eng) Chemical Engineering undergraduate curriculum;
• A defined area of research which can contribute to current research in the department, or develop a complementary
research stream;
• A track record of research with demonstrated research outputs, such as reports or publications.
Additional requirements for the Senior Lecturer posts are:
• Senior Lecturer (Permanent): Ability to teach Chemical Engineering process control with practical knowledge of control
logic followed in process design;
• Senior Lecturer (Contract): Ability to teach reactor design and have research aligned to catalysis and catalytic processing.

Leadership, management and administration
• Contribute to excellence in the operation of the Chemical Engineering teaching Programme, by maintaining and growing
the reputation of the programme;
• Perform administrative functions at Departmental, Faculty and, if needed, University level;
• Perform administrative functions related to teaching and research projects (i.e. convene courses, manage research
teams, manage funding for research, monitor operational expenses, write progress reports).
Social responsiveness
• Translate research findings for relevant non-academic audiences.
Requirements for Appointment at Associate Professor Level
• BSc (Eng) in Chemical Engineering, or a closely allied engineering discipline, and a PhD in Chemical Engineering or a
closely allied scientific discipline;
• Teaching experience and the ability to teach in the BSc (Eng) Chemical Engineering undergraduate curriculum;
• Postgraduate supervision experience as the principal supervisor;
• A track record of research with demonstrated research outputs in the area of catalysis and catalytic processing, which will
contribute to the Department’s current research foci in this area;
• A minimum of 5 years working experience in an academic position for a reputable institution;
• Relevant industrial working experience in their research-related field;
• A demonstrated record of raising research funds.
