Job Description

UCT is an inclusive and engaged research-intensive African university that inspires creativity through outstanding

We invite applications for two permanent full-time positions in tax in the Department of Finance & Tax within the
Faculty of Commerce. One of the positions must be at Associate Professorial or Professorial level, while the other
position may be at any level (i.e. Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor or Professor). We wish to fill these
two posts as soon as possible (preferably by January 2022 or soon thereafter). The primary functions are research,
teaching and learning, academic leadership, management and administration, and social responsiveness. Research
and teaching and learning are core requirements. We wish to appoint applicants with excellent technical tax knowledge
and seek those who wish to be part of a Faculty in which a critical and comparative approach to the study of domestic
and international tax is valued.
Requirements for the positions
Lecturer level:
• Masters in Tax or equivalent qualification in Tax, and a strong academic record.
• At least 4 years’ experience in the tax department(s) of medium to large South African audit or law firms, or in the
South African Revenue Service, where such work experience relates to tax advisory in South African income tax or
international tax.
• Excellent tax technical knowledge and skills.
• Demonstrable ability to lecture at Honours and Masters’ level.
Senior Lecturer level:
Same as Lecturer, with the addition of:
• Significant progress towards a PhD in taxation or cognate discipline, or a strong academic publication record; and
• CA(SA) or similar professional, commercial qualification in the field and, where appropriate, membership of a
controlling body.
Associate Professor level:
• PhD in taxation or cognate discipline;
• CA(SA) or similar professional, commercial qualification in the field and, where appropriate, membership of a
controlling body;
• At least 5 years’ experience in teaching and facilitating learning in post graduate South African accredited taxation
courses and/or accredited local or foreign courses in international tax;
• Strong publication record in the field of taxation with evidence of a national reputation in research in international
tax;
• Record of successful postgraduate tax research supervision at least at masters level;
• Ability to lead a team; and
• Evidence of practical tax advisory experience in international tax.
The following will be advantageous:
• Practical experience in the development of professional academic courses and programmes (e.g. SAICA or an
equivalent accreditation);
• Evidence of a national reputation in research in South African tax and practical tax advisory experience in South
African tax.
• Evidence of strong international links; and
• Extensive publications on international tax topics.
Professor level:
Same as Associate Professor, with the addition of:
• An international reputation in the field of international taxation, as evidenced by a strong publication record,
academic peer review of publications, and /or invitations to present at international tax conferences.
• Evidence of significant contributions to the field of taxation, particularly in international taxation, to bodies other
than universities.
Responsibilities for the positions at all levels:
• Facilitate teaching and learning in postgraduate courses offered by the Department of Finance & Tax in both South
African and International Tax;
• Undertake postgraduate tax research supervision;
• Conduct research and publish in the field of taxation;
• Departmental and faculty administration; and
• Contribute to an inclusive team/departmental environment.
