Role summary
The incumbent will be responsible for the provision of medication and supplementary services to patients
and members of the healthcare team under the supervision of the Senior Pharmacist and Pharmacy
Manager. The Pharmacist will also assume responsibility for meeting patient needs in a responsible,
satisfactory and cost-effective manner.
Key work output and accountabilities
The duties of the post include but are not limited to the following, and are carried out in accordance with
Netcare’s Policies and Procedures. The objective of this post is to render and promote quality patient care in
accordance with hospital standards and policies.
Dispensing of medication
Dispensing of prescriptions in hospital and retail pharmacy
Act as custodian for management of Schedule 5 & 6 drugs as per legal requirements.
Record prescriptions as per legislative requirements.
Assist and offer advice on the usage, side effects, contra-indications, drug interaction and proper
storage of medication to patients and other members of the healthcare team.
Advise and provide information regarding general health matters, including the effective use of
medicines, treatment of general diseases, primary health care, essential medication, mother and child
healthcare services, family planning and immunisation.
Assist with all aspects of ethical and surgical stock control including, re-ordering of stock, maintaining
dedicated stock areas for organisation and expiry dates.
Update doctors with regards to out of stock situations and offer alternatives.
Participation in continuous medical education and compliance to SAPC’s CPD requirements.
Stock control
Involved in all aspects of cyclical and full stock-take processes including procurement and ethical stock
control.
Processing of stock for internal departments and inter-clinic sales
Skills profile
Education
A relevant pharmaceutical qualification (B.Pharm. degree or Dip Pharm).
Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council.
Work experience
Adequate work experience in a Private Hospital or Retail Pharmacy environment is essential
Must have at least two year’s experience after completing Community Service.
Ability to work on the Retail Unisolv system would be advantageous
Assist in the management of stock in accordance to Netcare Stock Management policy with special
emphasis on designated stock areas
Compliance
Each individual is responsible for their own compliance to regulations as set out by the SA Pharmacy
Council.
Ensure compliance to GPP and DOH Core Standards
Keep updated with new developments in the Pharmaceutical field
Participation in continuous medical education
Supervise, guide and tutor Pharmacist Assistants and Interns.
Communication
Effective communication within the hospital community and handling of queries
Maintain and sustain effective working relationships with all medical and allied medical staff.
Build relationships with wards and departments to facilitate the understanding and updating of
Pharmacy systems and policies.
General
Timeous follow up on outstanding medication owing to patients
Conduct related administrative and house-keeping tasks.
Any other duties assigned by the Pharmacy Manager or Senior Pharmacist.
Clinical and Quality:
Active participation in Netcare’s clinical and quality initiatives
Daily ward rounds visiting specific patients as part of Antibiotic Stewardship initiative
Multi-disciplinary ward rounds
Provide in-service training and support to Nursing staff with regard to Medication information and
medication safety
Ability to work on the hospital SAP system would be advantageous
