Job Summary

To support the Enterprise Risk and Treasury CRO by taking overall responsibility for the group’s Stress Testing, Scenario Development, Scenario Planning. To take responsibility and accountability for coordinating, developing and executing best practice processes and tools to assist business and legal entities in optimising stress testing; assessing vulnerabilities to external drivers and ICAAP. To develop, maintain and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders for all areas of responsibility. Provide leadership and best practice advice with regard to impairment/capital actual and forecasting and capital buffer setting. Ensure quality forecasts (intra-year, full year, multiyear, stress testing) across the portfolios to support the relevant needs of business functions, risk types and legal entities.

Ensure that stress testing results are presented in a coherent manner that can be easily understood by a non-technical audience e.g. regulators, investors, Executives and non-executive directors. The incumbent must have the confidence, knowledge and experience to respond to respond to robust challenge and review by stakeholders.

Delivery of optimal outcomes to a senior audience under tight deadlines is an ongoing requirement for this role. Therefore the ability to interact with varied stakeholders across the bank to source data, modelled results and then aggregate these is essential to the role.

Accountability:  Stress Testing Strategy, Framework and Execution 

  • Take overall responsibility for the strategies, frameworks and execution ensuring that adequate governance is in place for the process.
  • Further develop and maintain the strategies and frameworks to ensure utilisation of best practises to best meet the needs of the business.
  • Leading role and counsel as the primary subject matter expert on these disciplines and best in class quantitative risk management practices.
  • Take responsibility for co-ordinating and reviewing the outcome from these disciplines to inform and counsel strategy and planning session such as medium and short term planning.
  • Ensure all instances where breaches occur are reported to and brought to the attention of senior management and governing bodies where applicable.
  • Maintain the Absa Group stress testing framework. Ensure the stress testing framework is reviewed and approved annually by the Group Executive Committee and the Board.
  • Ensure that stress testing functions are embedded in all business units, legal entities and risk types.
  • Manage all internal and external audit requirements regarding group stress testing including remediation of assurance review findings to improvement data, process, and model and people outcomes.
  • Stay abreast of new developments in the stress testing world, especially with regard to regulatory developments. In this regard keep abreast of Basel Committee, SA Prudential authority, Bank of England, US Federal Reserve, European Banking authority and APRA pronouncements on stress testing.
  • Manage and refine the stress testing governance process to ensure robust challenge of stress test results striving to ensure buy-in and integrity of results. Ensure effective controls are in place, and supporting processes are compliant with BCBS 239 principles for Risk Data Aggregation and Risk Reporting.
  • Submit regular and accurate reports to senior management and committees where applicable.
  • Take overall responsibility to manage internal and external stakeholders, to provide assurance on the soundness of the framework.
  • Effectively and efficiently handle queries from stakeholders (e.g. regulators) on reports.
  • Embed remote working arrangements for team in addition to working at corporate offices. Utilise tools like Microsoft planner to keep track of activities across of the team and ensure high levels of execution and delivery within and outside the team
  • Develop relationships with CROs, CFOs who are based in geographies outside South Africa through remote working tools and convening seminars and thought leadership sharing with the broader risk management community on topics relating to stress testing and scenario planning.
  • Provide secretarial services in respect of the Risk Appetite and Forecasting committee (RAFC)
  • Ongoing benchmarking of stress testing results to external model results e.g. GCORR Macro, BOE Stress Testing results etc.
  • Support the analysis of the Group’s aggregate risk profile and the Group risk appetite setting process to identify current and emerging risks, potential concentrations and correlations across risk types, legal entities and business units.
  • Drive change management initiatives relating to data management, system, process and methodology enhancements for stress testing. This includes supporting the development of climate risk measurement and management capabilities within Absa Group, as well as the integration of capital and liquidity risk stress testing activities.

Accountability:  Scenario development and scenario planning

  • Develop scenarios that evaluate potential discontinuities that impact Absa Group for Financial forecasting, Stress Testing, Recovery planning and IFRS9 impairment modelling.
  • Maintain the Absa Group scenario development standard.
  • Build productive, collaborative relationships with Group Treasury. Group Finance, function owners and business area risk and finance managers to drive the implementation of the Absa Group stress testing framework, including the allocation of accountabilities, roles and responsibilities to embed the end-to-end stress testing process. Ensure that stress testing functions are embedded in all business units, legal entities and risk types.

Accountability:  ICAAP & Recovery Plan components related to stress testing

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to complete the  Absa Internal Capital Adequacy Assessment Process (ICAAP), ensuring the ICAAP document follows the appropriate governance before being approved by the Board.
  • Assess the impact of scenario analysis or stress testing on the capital management strategies in order to determine adequate capital buffers.
  • Complete the stress testing components of the Absa Group Recovery Plan. Provide advice on the Significant Legal Entities’ capital recovery options and review and challenge their submissions for inclusion in the Recovery Plan.
  • Complete the Pillar 3 disclosure as it pertains to stress testing and ensure compliance with all the relevant requirements in this regard.
  • Provide inputs to the Board, GRCMC (Group Risk & Capital Management Committee) and Absa Treasury Committee as required.
  • Advise on the capital implications of regulatory change by assessing the impact thereof and provide advice to the appropriate governance forum.

Accountability:  Risk and Business management

  • Drive a culture of proactive compliance and risk management within the team and the function as a whole.
  • Understand and comply with all applicable governance, compliance and risk policies and procedures, ensuring that the relevant documentation is in place.
  • Ensure appropriate early warning mechanisms are in place to flag potential consequences to senior and executive management.
  • Cross-divisional and pan-continental responsibilities in support of the integrated Risk management function across Absa. Provide review and challenge of the Group risk profile prepared as part of the Integrated Planning process (STP/MTP/RAF).
  • Contribute to the development of business unity strategy for the next 2-3 years by providing a view on potential improvements for products or services and an assessment of the existing situation and anticipated changes in the external environment.
  • Agree targets and take accountability for the overall achievement of performance objectives in the business area in terms of employee satisfaction, customer experience, cost performance, return on investments, risk, compliance and governance requirements.
  • Provide clear direction to team members on the strategic plan and key focus areas and ensure their understanding and buy-in.
  • Analyse effectiveness of processes and systems in use in the department and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Benchmark productivity of the department against industry standards and create measures to improve productivity.

  • Ensure that stress test architecture is in place to support the sourcing of data, implementation of models, analysis of results, and visual interface to present the results in a coherent and easily understandable manner
